Croydon State School is a small school situated in the Gulf of Carpentaria, 150km west of Georgetown and 150km east of Normanton. Croydon has a rich history, once being a gold mining town. The well preserved buildings along the main street are reminders of this bygone era.
The gold mining has been replaced by a substantial cattle industry. Many stations around Croydon are thousands of hectares in size. The school was originally founded in 1890.
The traditional owners of the land, in and around Croydon, are the Tagalaka people. They have a strong tradition within Croydon and work tirelessly to support indigenous people.
Croydon State School offer classes from prep to year 7 in a multi age setting. There are approximately forty children enrolled with a teaching Principal, two teachers and three teacher aides. The school has an indigenous enrolment of over 60%.
Parents and families play an important role in education and we look forward to working with you. We also believe that your child’s progress, both academic and social, is directly linked to attendance. The more your child comes to school the more they will learn and develop.
The classrooms are made up of two, air-conditioned areas with a concertina door. Each room has a main teaching area, a common floor area and several learning centres or reading areas. Children work through key learning areas at an appropriate level and have input from teachers and assistance from competent teacher aides.
Croydon State School utilises the Australian Curriculum through a combination of the Curriculum into the Classroom (C2C) units and language perspectives units developed through Education Queensland. There is a strong emphasis on indigenous perspectives in the curriculum.
